I have a large Australian freshwater turtle shell (sans turtle) and would like to know how to preserve/polish the shell. Some of the outer layer is starting to lift at the edges. Is it possible to remove the whole outer layer or should I leave it alone. Would that give me a smoother surface to polish? Any suggestions welcome.

the answer is ther i preserved my shell's in a 3 gallon bucket of cool water and i add 1 to 2 cup's of dry preserve it work's for me.
i let dry for three day's wipe with acitone, polish with turtel wax
very small amount and buff
I have a fairly old (>60year) preserved turtle, and the edges of the shell are curling up and flaking. What would be the best way to preserve the shell and prevent further damage?
Thanks.
