Turn the turtle over and with a shape knife cut the bottom of the shell off, then gut it.

I also have a turtle shell from a pet turtle who died and was autopsied by the vet. There is a small residue of sinew, etc. left on the backbone & shell edges that creates a smell & I can't get clean. Any suggestions for a final cleaning that won't damage the shell?
I found a large (dead) snapper. I have the shell, burried it for a week, now all of the out side pieces (scutes ?) fell off. How do I polish and glue them back on? Thankyou
