Recently I was granted the tail of a western. How do I preserve the rattle?

You could remove as much tissue in the area of the first rattle( blood button) and then coat with borax and let it sit till dry. Dust off the borax residue, give the rattle a nice coat of sealer, and you will be fine. If you want it to rattle, do not coat it with anything that will stop the individual rattles from moving. If it is for just display, coat it with elmers glue and let dry. will last fotrever
