The horned lizard is a protected specie in Texas and cannot be kept in captivity or owned as a mount legally. You might have better luck searching in Arizona, New Mexico or Nevada. They may be legal in one of those states.

Other option would be to have a replica done.

Until I hook up with a taxidermist how should I preserve it in the mean time?

If it is legal to own where you are, cost for mounting would be 150.00 plus return shipping of 5.95 ppriority mail.In the mean timew freeze it in a plastic bag till you decide. You can e-mail me if interested
