Off the top of my head...

I would say it's a ground beetle. Given the shape of the thorax I would say it's Coleoptera Carabidae. Not a bug expert though. Maybe the other "CSI's" can help more.

Oh, sorry...

If it is a ground beetle, they like to eat caterpillars. They are called "caterpillar hunters" and I think they also eat grubs. If you are getting them in your yard, you may want to spray or dust for caterpillars and june bug grubs. Again, I'm not a bug expert.

Need close ups

Without close up pictures of the antennae, head, and thorax I would have to guess. These beetles appear to be about an inch to an inch and a half long. So from that I would guess that this would belong to the Long-horned beetle family most likely one of the Prioninae. Which mainly feed on tree roots as larvae. Like I said this is just a guess. Thanks for the challenge.

local County Extension Service office. The agent there will be able to identify them for you, tell you if they are trouble, and tell you what to use to eradicate them, if they are a problem.

i was on floridas 2nd place FFA insect id team and that isnt a ground beetle ground beetles have a sort of ribbed back and dont have yellow on their under side... if you arent convinced by any of these replies the county extension office or if you have a local agricultural department would probably have your answer
