breaking the hide

Submitted by scott moore on 12/15/00. ( )

My question is about breaking the hide. Through checking the archives I've found the basic gist on how to do it by hand. My question is, how much pressure do I have to use when dragging across the edge of an ax? 1 person mentioned that not a lot was needed and several others said it takes a lot of elbow grease. Thanks in advance, Scott.

Without going too deepling into how much is too much, you need FIRM pressure on the hide. If it is a moose, it obviously takes more pressure than for a thin skinned bear or caribou. Once you do one like a moose, you'll send all your hides to a professional tannery from then on, believe me.
