salt bear or continue to flesh?

Submitted by eric on 12/19/00. ( )

working on a bear and have already removed literally 10-15 pounds of fat and flesh...ears,lips and eyes already split....question is should i continue to flesh(as there is still alot to go)or would it be best to go ahead and give a good salting then finish fleshing after that? im fleshing the "old fashion" way (by hand) and im concerned that i may get some slippage due to the amount of time it takes to complete the fleshing by hand...thanks for your advice in advance

Salt then

Salt and keep on fleshing. The salt will probably make it easier to grab ahold of the meat and fat and peel it off the skin.

It won't help you much this time, but before you get your next bear, call John Rinehart and order an ulu knife (about $15). It is sharpened on one side only and the semi-circle blade can flesh out a bear like moving hot butter. Once you use it, you'll be amazed at the time it can save you when you have to do this miserable job by hand.
