What a pickle will do is break down a hide and plump it
up to make it easier to shave. Generally your Ph can be
2.0 down to 1.5. If you have it above 2.0 it is a good Idea
to have a bacteriacide like Basacryl NBKU in the solution.
Some products like formic acid , citric acid or Bascal S
can be used for a pickle.
We offer a product called Pre-Tan #110 to also use in a salt
pickle that will help plump a skin, set the hair and make
a softer skin, use it in a salt pickle for 6 to 8 hrs.
A pickle is a safe place to store a hide as long as the Ph
is below 2.0 , if you cannot get to it right away.

to dissolve remove the soluble proteins. Skin is made up of two types of proteins soluble(globular) and insoluble(structural). The pickle also kills bacteria, makes the skin easier to shave by plumping, and creates a positive ionic charge in the remaining insoluble skin proteins to attract the tannins.

I suggest that you purchase "The Breakthrough Mammal Taxidermy Manual" and read chapter 4, as this last paragragh only touches the surface of the subject.
