Thinning a deer skin

I just finished tanning my first deer skin. I want to thin the skin to make it really soft and pliable. Should I have thinned the skin before I tanned it or can I still? And either way what are my options for thinning the skin before and after tanning?

Depends on which tanning process was used.
For instance, wet tan or dry tan.

I use liquatan and liquasoft. After applying the liquatan come back the next day and put another coat of liquasoft on it. Then let it dry out completely. After that I use sand paper to cut it down and make it flexible. Hope this helps.
