Hi,
Ive been reading the archives and cant seem to get a consistant answer. Can I rinse right after the tan (while its still wet) or should I wait till after tan has dried on skin before I can rinse fur, wanting to get all excess oils (proplus) and tanning agents off of fur so I can get a nice fluffy result.
Thanks in advance

When you say rinse I must assume that you have already washed and degreased whatever it was you where tanning. If my assumtion is correct then I must say that it is OK to do a quick rinse in clear cold water. I just put some water in my sink and rinse it fairly quick.
Now if you have not washed and degreased then I would say that that step must first be completed before it hits the tan. I do a quick wash with Tide or something like it (the cheaper the better) just before I place the hide in the pickle, unless it's something greasy like a bear then I do a heavy degreasing before and after the pickle. Then, just before I neutralize my hide, I give it a very good final washing.
EZ-100 is, in my opion, the best in house tan available and possibly out of house too.
Im sorry, I might not have been quite clear in what I was asking.
To clarify, this is what Ive done (to a fox):
1. Skinned
2. Salted once, then again for 24 hours
3. Rehydrated (6 hours)
4. Pickled (Saftee Acid) for 36 hours
5. Fleshed and Shaved, put back in pickle for 24 hours
6. Degreased (Super solvent)
7. Neutralized
8. Tanned (EZ 100)
9. Oiled (proplus)
My question, can I rinse the hide (fur side only) right after oiling solution or should I wait till hide has dried. Am I washing away tanning solution or oils if its still wet? I get a matted feel to my fur. I dont have a tumbler so I try tumbling with a dryer set on no heat. Our furs this time of year (in the Arctic)are pretty thick with underfur, I dont know if tumbling or rinsing will get me a better fluff to my skins.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Sorry for the long post,

I did and he recommended NOT to wash it as you could wash some of the oil away. The tan is there for good, but the oil is water soluable. He did say I could give it a real quick rinse. I choose not to, I just mount it up and then I wipe her down with a rag and solevent. After 24 hours I wipe her down with a grooming spray for show horses. Hope this helps?

I rinse before I oil. Then after I oil I tumble my hides for as long as it takes to become dry and fluffy. Plus after I mount my mammals and they are good and dry, I wash them again with shampoo. After I wash and throughly rinse the mount I blow out the hair with compressed air then blow dry. The hair comes out superbly with nice fluf, luster and softness.
