soften raw hide

Submitted by Jim on 1/31/01. ( )

Is it possible to soften a raw hide leather strap so it can be used without being stiff as a board? It is app. 1/4 inch thick and 2 inches wide. I would like to make a guitar strap out of it but it is too stiff. Any suggestions anybody. Thanks

Try Glycerine!

Use warm liquid Glycerine on it - sparingly - until you get the right softening effect. This is typically used on rawhide to make it flexible. However - dont use too much or if you make that guitar strap, heat or strain on it may make the glycerine bleed out.
