too much oil?

Submitted by Petra on 2/11/01. ( ) 12.21.201.25

I tanned a fox using saftee-acid and EZ-100, oiled with proplus oil.
Now it's been hanging at room temperature(low humidity) for at least 3 days and it's still not dry. It's legs, tail and head dryed and look really great and are soft after breaking by hand. But somehow it seems that the main body won't dry out. it's kinda oily. not real bad....it just feels a bit oily. Did I apply too much oil? I thought I really went low on it. My question....should I just wait longer and it will be ok? or should I do anyhting like rinsing...to get that slight oil film of it and so allow it to dry better?
any suggestions are appreciated. let me know what you guys think.
thanks a bunch!

Petra, I think just let it dry out. Extra oil shouldnt hurt a thing.

Rub sawdust on it!

It could simply be your humidity and patience, but if it really has you bothered - try rubbing sawdust into the fur and over the flesh, and then comb and blow it away. Then let it hang again to dry. The fur may be holding a lot of the moisture causing it to dry slower. If you detect oil in the moisture, pour some Odorless Mineral Spirits into the sawdust you use, and then rub it over the skin. If there is any oil the OMS should pick it up.

I have also found rubbing cornmeal on an oily hide works great. I would recommned drying the hair out some before turning hide out. Your fox hair is probably not drying. Turn and let it dry for a while.
