Oily Fox

Submitted by Chris on 3/29/01. ( cdppoolman@juno.com ) 63.17.146.242

I just finished tanning my first grey fox. I tanned it along with a red fox and a raccon using Lutan F and then used tanning oil. I pickled it and degreased it the same way I did the other skins. The other fox and raccoon turned out fine but the grey fox skin is still very oily. My question is why is this skin oily and the rest are not? Everything was done identical to all of them. Also is there anything I can still do to the skin to take the oil out of it?

Thanks for your help!

do it over

I would do the gray fox over. dry it off and flesh it with a wire wheel. then place back in the pickle. I would also use tannery degreaser in the pickle. you can get it from Rinehart taxi, or McKenzie taxi, you only need to put about an oz or 2 right in a 5gal pickle. It will do a grate job of taking the grease out of the skin.
When you retan the hide I cut back just a little on the Lutan-f. This should do it.

tanning furs

When you tan a fur you want to order a bait from Knoblachs, you want to take the furs out of your pickle after they are wire wheeled and put into bait then remove from bait after about 30-45 minutes, after I bait my furs I put them through a quick mineral spirits then back into a hard pickle for 24 hours then tan, youll never have an oily fur again. The fox that is allready tanned just take it and tumble again but put about 6 ounces of mineral spirits into your tumbling mix, this should help to degrease a lot better.
