Strong tanning oil odor on flat moose hide

Submitted by Chris on 4/8/01. ( ctrembla@cisco.com ) 171.69.209.241

Hi,
I just got back a Moose hide that I had tanned. It came out quite well but has a strong "chemical" smell which I'm assuming is from the tanning oil. It smells like rawhide squared!

Is there anything I should use to tame that smell?

Thanks,
Chris

Try Dry Cleaning it!

Dry clean it using sawdust with Odorless Mineral Spirits added to it. Put the sawdust in a plastic garbage bag, add a small amount of OMS, tie it off shake it around for 5-10 minutes, remove, blow off! More than likely you were correct in thinking its the oil used on the skin. This should clean it up.

Try Depewz-it ô from SENTRY with the saw dust.

Try adding about 1 oz of SENTRY DEPEWZ-ITô WS to the sawdust per gallon of OMS. It does not mask the odor but combines with the odiferous substance to get rid of the odor. Available at any of your suppliers or 800 us at 800-868-1454. Good Luck.
