I have tryed this unit on green deer capes, little luck howe ever skin your deer and put fresh salt on the cape for three days ,new salt every day then rehydrate and it seems to work pretty darn good Imade sure to get every bit of salt i could out of the hide does any one see a draw back or problem with doing it this way? I am new to trying this method and was told aboute it from a guy that read it in taxi. today i have only done scrap pieces and never tanned . I also have never tanned I have formic acid and liqui tan besides pkl. salt is there anything else i need? anyone got a recepee for a first timer? HELP ANYONE
First off slow down your rambling on way to fast here LOL.
Ok now using the mini-flesher, salt first over night. Then you can use it and it will take the flesh of with no problem and even thin the hide down some. Leaving salt on for three days and changing it every day is to much but it won't hurt. The problem with waiting three days before you flesh it is, that the hide can dry out and become hard in some spots. Well if you hit it with the mini-flesher it can and will cut a nice hole in it. Been there done that, but that was ages ago. Now I have the Eager Beaver so much nicer.
As for the formic acid I don't use it but heard it works well. Just keep your PH at 2 or less.
After the pickle you will need to neturlize the hide. A hand for of baking soda in the water and let it soak for 20 min. Take out and let it drain for an hour. Next step is to apply the liqua-tan on. Now they have dirrections on the bottle for you to follow. I like to freeze my hides and then when I'm ready to mount them I take out the hide wash it, tumble it in the dryer ( since I don't have a tumbler) with a few towels in it. NO HEAT. This will dry the hair and fluff it up for you to mount. It does a great job, but becareful, don't let the wife see you do this. Man can she get mad if she gets deer hair in the Undees LOL Just clean out the lint trap.
First off thanks for the help I am pretty new to the whole taxi. scene and have only done two deer heads so a eager beaver might be out there a bit for me at this point. Far as the undees go ive ,like you, been there , done that. Who says my wife wears undees anyhow?

How long should deer cape ect be left in formic acid? Anyone know the ratio for mixin the pickle? think I heard 5.5oz formic acid to 5gal water and how much pickling salt? Any thing else I should add? Can a person leave a hide in a pickle too long?
Just click on his name and e-mail him. He's got the formula for all pickles. Tanning is his middle name.
PS lucky you I wasn't talking about that Eager Beaver.
Can a person use any salt in a formic acid pickle or does it got to be pickling salt? Iknow it can not be rock salt but otherwise whatever
You can use regular salt. It doesn't have to be pickling salt. Try and use non-ionized salt. But if thats all you can get ok.
rough flesh cape, salt the cape for two days then rehydrate and put in a pickle of your choice for two or three days (i use safety acid)then take it out and use the mini-flesher i`ve been using this method for years and have not had any problems
