Submitted by Dan on 6/3/01. ( arktrapper@aol ) 205.188.208.71

just needed some advise on fleshing. i'm new to this, mainly working with bobcats and the like. can i get good "thinning" using just a double blade fleshing knife & beam or is there a better way. (without buying a rottery knife, want to see if i can do this first before buying a 1000.00 + knife for hobby work) how do i tell if im thin enough to have good strech and flex. (using the a.t. w/the arrowhead crystals) THANKS FOR ANY HELP DAN

How to scrape a cat.

I scrape a cat skin with a trapper's small scraper. You can buy one from trapping supplies company. 5$ or so. It's a piece of dull sheet metal. This metal sheet is sunk into a wood hand. You push it with one hand on cat skin which is beamed. A cat's skin is thin. Use a double blade fleshing knife and your looking for tears and even worse. These large fleshers in my opinion apply to much force against the skin. Use a beam, a sharpe kitchen paring knife, and a small scrapping tool, to turn lips and ears and shave/trim around face and rest of skin. Hope this helps.
