I will be using the Kwik-N-Eze method to tan a rabbit and a fox. After the pickle, do I have to shave the skin? If I do, can I use a grinder or a wire wheel or do I have to use a mini-flesher?
Both a Rabbit or a Fox are considered rather thin skins and a lot of Taxidermists and Tanners do not bother to shave them. Yes - you may want to use a wire wheel or beam to remove the membrane, but once its off, you'll notice the skin is really thin. I do not shave them. Pickle them, neutralize them in a baking soda bath for 30 minutes, then damp-dry and apply the KWIK-N-EZE! Fold for 3-4 hours, then unfold, mount or freeze. Before freezing make sure the fur is damp-dry! Not soaking wet!
