I just mixed my first batch of pickling solution, using Saftee-Acid. The directions say to mix 1 gal water, 1# of salt and .5 ozs. od Saftee-Acid. It tells you to keep the ph @ 1, but doesn't state the recommended salt level. Does anyone know what it should be?
This is my first time at pickling/tanning and I don't want to screw up! I actually added a bit less salt, figuring the salt on the hides would compensate.
Thanks for all the help you have provided me!
Todd
Hi Todd, I mix 1 lb. salt, .5ozs saftee acid with 1 gallon of water. I first rehydrate my capes first in water with bacteriacide. I flesh them well before salting so it only takes a few hours to become rehydrated, then i place it in the pickle. The salt content should read 40% or higher. If you follow that mixing solution there should be no problems. The Ph level is more important. Keep it under 2.0, check it twice daily until it levels off. Also stir the cape in the pickle twice daily, then check ph level. Any questions fell free to email me. Paul
If you need a Salinometer reading - keep it 40% or higher! You'll be fine. Otherwise, Paul gave you good advice! Keep that Ph below a 2.0!
Thanks for the help. My salt is only at 15%. I'm heading out to the garage to add more salt right now.
Thanks a lot for the info!
