I pickle using saftee acid and tan with Lutan F. My question is can I reuse
the pickle and how often or how long. And can I reuse my tanning solution.
If so how often or how long. Thanks Eric
The main thing to remember is to keep the salinity at 43 and the Ph at 1.5. Having this in mind I have pickled over 40 deer plus fox, coyote, rabbits, and a few others in on 20 gallon solution.
Now I did not do this all at once. I might do 5 deer at once check all the above and add what was needed. The one thing you will see is dirt build up, caused by dirty capes. This will make you pickle look ucky but the dirt is water soluble. After this I figured it was time to make a new batch.
He told you fight on the pickle. When it comes to the tan, don't try and re-use it since it takes the right amount of tan as a percentage of the weight of the skins to tan properly, and if you follow the mixing instruction your tan should be basically used up.

Concerning your pickle, Frank is correct BUT consider that the pickle solution basically dissolves out various proteins, lipids and fatty acids. At some point, the pickle solution will reach a point of saturation whereby the pickle may be less effective even though the pH and salinity is correct. I notice that skins out of older pickles will have a fibrous precipitate coalesce on the hair during the neutralizing process. As a rule, I make a new 10 gal pickle after 6-8 deer capes. Hey, safety acid is CHEAP.
Thanks for your imput, i've been using one pickle per deer cape and just
wanted to find out if I could reuse it. I tried to pickle two capes in
one batch and had slippage, but I also had the P.H. rise to about 4 before
I caught it. Just wanted to find out if I could save a little time and
money.
