How many times can I retan a skin without it falling apart or can I degrease without having to retan.
I guess I'm missing your real question. What is the original tan and why do you want to retan it? With what?
Or why do you want to simply degrease it? Instead of retan it?
Somehow I think we lack some important info.
The original tan was lutan-f I would like to retan with the new 1 hr
tan from mckinzies the hides after the tanning are just a grease mess
so is a re tan needed or just a degreaser someone told me it might be
grease burn they won't break down and are descoloered.
Hve you tumbled them with hard wood and just a half cup of laqure thinner? this will help to clean up the excess oil and give you a better idea of what you have. before you go to excessive work.
I agree with jim! Before you "knock yourself out" trying to retan (?) I would stick with degreasing it first, according to what he suggested. Use sawdust and thinner in a plastic garbage can and toss it around for 5-10 minutes - then blow it off! Then check it out - If you have hard brown spotty areas then obviously it may be untanned in spots - but Lutan F (N) is a good tan - very reliable! It has an indefinite shelf-life and is a good all-around Taxidermy tannage. One other note - the problem may not be the Lutan F (N) tan - but the type of oil you used, or how you applied it.
