Alum tan

Is a commercial alum tan any good? I don't know the different process. For all I know it's the industry standard. I'm looking for a couple of mule deer capes and a fellow has a couple that are commercially alum tanned. Thanks.

I JUST MOUNTED MY LAST ALUMTAN CAPE.. WHITETAIL 7.5X20....Cape got to me and b nor c was 20inc this cape was like carboard to work with.. very tough no strech at all let me tell you i rehydrated this cape over and over even tried to rock it to get any streach but came up short..alum-tan is very thick leather..Im sure there are people out here that like it? BUT BE CAREFULL AND DOUBLE CHECK MEASURMENTS!

Alum tan has nothing to do with thick hides.

Yes alum is a very good tanning agent, but you must shave the cape thin for it to relax well.

Sounds like Bret had acid swell in the cape. I do alum tanning and get excellent stretch, but I also shave the cape super thin by commercial standards.
