Tanning Moose?

Submitted by Clyde Isaak on 10/10/01. ( cisaak@csicable.net )

My neighbor just asked me about how to tan a moose he just harvested. I have never tanned anything larger than a beaver so don't have any idea if it is feasable to try to tan this hide. Is there a product you would recommend for this type of skin? He said he doesn't care how soft it gets, just wants it tanned and will probly use it as some type of rug. Thanks for any replys.

It seems many taxidermists think "tanning their own" is a prerequisite, but this is a prime example of casting your troubles on someone else QUICKLY. If you've never tanned anything larger than a beaver, taking this on is going to be like tanning a Mack Truck. Salt the sucker down and find a tannery. Then CHARGE appropriately for the service.

That's the first thought that came to my mind. I really didn't want to even attempt this project. I'll suggest he does just what you said, "Send it to a tannery".

Thanks, Clyde
