Tanning for Frist Time !

What should I buy being a frist time tanner tools,chemicals, Is there anything that is a must for tanning ? I work at a butcher shop and see alot of hides thrown away . Like buffalo,wild boar,white tail, steer,and a mule deer now and then . I also have someone that traps and He throws away hides Why I dont know but last week He thru out a nice red fox . So if you can help me PLease do .

O.K. Here's what I would do if I were you:

Grab the next hide that looks good, with a good knife, get as much flesh, membrane, etc. that you can get off. Then find a place to lay the hide fur side down and at a slight incline, cover it with salt (cheap, non-iodized, buy it by the sack at any local feed mill) rub it into the skin side liberally, pile it on, make sure not to miss a fold of skin. After 24 hours, shake off the old salt and do this again. After another 24, shake off the old salt and let the hide dry.
Now, take a deep breath and wander around this forum, go to the library, order some books, booklets, tapes, whichever work good for you. Study up on tanning because your hides will keep for a GOOD LONG TIME in a cool, dry area while you learn to finish what you started.

I have mixed up BascalS with water per instuuctions and my PH is still 4 I added some more and it did`nt change,what`s wrong.
