I read the tip from Bruce Rittel,on softening hides. In his tip he mentioned washing the hide during the same time frame that you shave the hide.My question is,wouldn't this cause acid swell if you introduce the hide to the wash rinses?

Washing vs. Soaking!

Yes - prolonged soaking would surely cause the skin - which it acidic and "not" in the presence of salt - to swell. However, we are talking about simply washing the skin or cape for 10-15 minutes and then rinsing it before placing it back into the pickle. 10-15 minutes will not "swell" the skin. An hour to 2 hours will - and will porbably begin to pulp the epidermal layer too!

Thanks!
