Beaver blanket

Submitted by Sean S on 2/5/02. ( ) 209.237.13.100

My problem is this: It seems that I can never get a beaver pelt to tan perfectly flat. There are ripples or curles on the edge from uneven stretching/skin not shaved properly/I don't know what I'm doing etc. Does anyone have any tricks of the trade that result in a FLAT blanket?

Thanks,

Sean

Beaver are typically loose in the middle because of there shape. It's like trying to skin a basket ball and then tack it out flat. Spring beaver seem to be a bit worse. It can usually be corrected by OVER stretching in an oval (Canadian stretch). This will thin the edges and tighten up the middle. If it still sags when it is dry you can spray the center area with water and should tighten up some when it dries. It doesn't work all the time. I have one now that is giving me some problems but it looks a lot better than it did.
Good luck, Bill
