You need to do some reading about tans. ALL tans leave the hide hard. It's the breaking and oiling AFTERWARDS that makes them soft. And personally, I don't recommend topical (paint on)tans for any soft/garment tan. It may work fine, but I just feel better with immersion tans for this type work.

Breaking with Rinehart's Cream Tan

When using Rinehart's cream tan, I generally allow the skin to semi-dry, afterwhich I apply Rinehart's rug softening oil. After the oil has soaked in and the skin starts to dry, work it over the edge of a counter for a little while each day. Do this until the hide is completely dry. Once dry, take a piece of 80 grit sandpaper and sand the flesh side of the hide. Then reoil the hide and repeat the breaking process. Repeat this process until you are satisfied with the softness and flexibility of the hide.
