I purchased a reindeer hide about 2 years ago and it is used mainly as a cedar chest cover, so it receives little if any wear. It is slipping hair like crazy.....is there anything that I can do to stop this process? If it was not tanned correctly, I probably have no recourse, but perhaps one of you experts might have a solution for me. My sincere thanks! Joanne

What you percieve as slipping may really be the hair (being hollow) snaping off at the base - like usually happens with age! To slow it down - you can spray it with a liquid lanolin human wig hair product. However - now it may be slightly oily (since lanolin never dries) and it may attract dust. Plus - the process will continue but at a drastically reduced rate. Sorry - there are no fixes for this occuring!
I guess I'll just keep the vacuum handy....thanks for taking the time to answer my concern. I appreciate it.
I am pleased to see this post. I have a reindeer skin received from a sami family in sweden in august 01 and it was fine there. After 6 months it started to shed hair and it gets worse by the week. It is a pity as the skin is so soft. I guess the problem is the same as Joannes (above). Since the answer has there been any other suggestions to improve this situation? I was wondering if it is right to assume in that case that reindeers skins are not meant to last as home products and have a life of only a few years? I did think it would last longer but have since heard the shedding hair is a common problem so do not feel inclined to replace. Finally would hairspray work instead of a liquid lanolin human wig hair ? I confess I do not know what you mean! Thanks for any help
