African Hides Into Boots

Submitted by Jerry S. on 2/17/02. ( jds@htcomp.net ) 67.97.229.177

Has anyone had a client who wanted the back hides of their African animals made into boots?

I don't mean hair on tanning - chrome tanned leather to be sent to a custom bootmaker for custom boots.

I'm going to Africa in June and thought about keeping the back hides just for this purpose.

Are there any critters that work better for boot leather than others? Any that don't work at all?

Who is recommended as a tannery for having the hides tanned?

Are the hides fleshed and salt dried in the normal way?

All help appreciated!

Thanks!

Jerry S.

Re-Wording

I worded that second line wrong. What I meant was that I don't want the leather to be tanned with hair on it. Instead, I believe it needs to be chrome tanned to be usable for boot leather.

Thanks!

Boot makers prefer to have them tanned either with Chrome or Veg tanned, then retanned with a syntan. Either method can be used, but each Boot maker usually prefers one or the other. They sometimes can be picky! As for a leather tanner for your "back skins" - it may be difficult. I'd first talk to Quil-Ceda in WA and see if they can do them. If not, perhaps they may have a suggestion.
