? for Mr. Rittel

Mr. Rittel,

I have a couple of questions about using Lutan-f. First, is 1oz/lb of wet hide exactly what you need? Or does the 1oz/lb formula actually provide slightly more chemical than necessary to do a complete tan on the hide? Is using more than 1oz/lb of hide beneficial (simply as a safety precaution) or is it a waste of chemical?

Also could you provide a few examples of how long you would leave various furbearers in a "static tan" of lutan-f. Such as raccoon, mink, badger, coyote?

Thank you very much.

Chris

Lutan F (N)!

Lutan F (N) is meant to be used at a 6% usage - or 1 Lb. of Lutan F to every 1 Lb. of wet drained skin weight. 6 % usage equates to exactly 0.960 Ozs. to each 1 Lb. of skin weight - but its usually rounded off to 1.0 Ozs. Much easier that way! Since most formulas recommend using 2 Quarts of Water for each 1 Lb. of wet drained skin weight, obviously you would mix 2 Ozs. of Lutan F (N), and 6 Ozs. of Salt, to each 1 gallon of Water. This 1 gallon solution would tan 2 Lbs. of wet drained skin weight.

I would advise you "not" to get into different tanning times for Lutan F (N)! Be consistent. Whether they are thin skins or shaved heavier ones - I would allow them to tan for 16-20 hours. Will some of them tan faster than others? Yes! But doing them all together is more efficient in terms of your time. Why take the time to pull out the different skins at different times? Make yourself this rule - If you are doing a load of "all" thinly fleshed skins - pull them in 16 hours. If they are "all" heavy shaved skins - pull them in 18 hours.
