I recently purchased the video "FLESHING AND TANNING BASICS" from McKenzie and Mike Gillis states in the video that a WHITEATIL hide does not really need to be thinned.WHAT IS UP WITH THAT?I have watched it twice and Im am sure that this is what he said.I know this guy is a pro and turns out excellent work so now I am really screwed up in the head. Can someone please explain.I will check back later, right now I am going to go outside and beat my head up against a TREE.

Losing It,
Don't get excited. The English language is beautiful and sometimes using a word correctly can be confusing. "NEEDS TO BE" thinned and "DOESN'T" in Mike's comments might be confusing. Instead of "NEEDS", however, put the word MUST. Boars MUST be thinned, Buffalo, elk, and moose MUST be thinned. Thinning whitetails is seldom a MUST. If you CAN thin one, your definition on the form and the detail of the finish product are likely to be greatly improved. Mike was only referring to the hides that don't fit into the MUST category such as pronghorns, caribou, and all the fur bearers.
