FOUND OUT I'M LEAVING TOWN

Submitted by CHRIS on 2/27/02. ( christophertodd@hotmail.com ) 65.68.100.198

IT'S WEDNESDAY EVENING AND I HAVE TWO DEER HIDES THAT JUST RECEIVED THEIR FIRST SALTING AND I FOUND OUT THAT I HAVE TO LEAVE TOWN ON MONDAY MORNING FOR BUSINESS. I'LL BE ABLE TO GET THE HIDES INTO THE PICKLE (WHICH I'M DOING FOR THE FIRST TIME)BY THE TIME I HAVE TO LEAVE. I'LL BE ABLE TO GET THE PH CHECKED A COUPLE OF TIMES, BUT HOW IMPORTANT WILL IT BE TO CHECK THEM WHILE I'M AWAY? I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO, CAN I LEAVE THEM IN THE PICKLE (NOT BEING ABLE TO MONITOR THE PH) OR SHOULD I PUT THEM IN THE FREEZER. PLEASE HELP!

Put them in the freezer.

The pH will normally climb, so yu not being there you couold lose the hide. Wait until you get back.

I wouldn't put in freezer

You said that you already salted them once, just salt a second time and let them dry hard until you have time to pickle them. Salted hides don't really freeze, that's why the highway department puts salt on the roads.

Salting

Bruce is correct!
I too would salt them a second time.AFter the 2nd salting, I would drape them over something that will allow air to circulate between them, also alowing them to drain, not allowing the moisture to rest in or on the capes.
Hey Bruce....I hear the Turkeys Gobbling in my sleep. Wont be long Buddy! Good luck and let me know how you do!

Have a good day to all,
Dave

with out the time to deal with the pickle properly, dont do it!
salt is the most important step in setting the folical !
so get the salting done, let them dry, when you come home deal with rehydration and pickle , at your leisure
:)
( yes i have been listening ! and reading and reading and doing and doing! , thanks tax-net teachers )
