Tanning goat

ok, I've started with salting my goat hide and am deciding what to do next. I've never done this before.

The last two hides we sent out to be done. The company we sent to saud they could only make them onto leather & could not leave the hair on. They said it was because deer hair is hollow & goat hair is solid.
Is this true? Can I use one of the tanning kits and keep the hair on this one?

I want this one with hair on. He was really pretty.
I raise a few goats cast off from a local dairy. If this goes well I'll choose the prettiest kids to raise.

Yes - Use a Tanning Kit!

Yes - buy a Kit for this first try at it. That way you have all the ingredients (except for Baking Soda and Salt) plus the instructions. Treat the Goatskins like Deerskins - except that Goatskins are usually not as thickly fleshed as Deer so you can get by without shaving in most cases. What hollow hair versus solid hair has to do with leather is puzzling. I really dont understand the reasoning involved in that explanation.

Once you are satisfied the Kit gives you the results you want - then order the seperate ingredients for more tanning in the future. I would recommend using our Rittels EZ-2000 Kit to tan your Goats hair-on. Its an easy to use Kit and the tanned skins are white leathered and washable. Lynn,

I'm new to this tanning stuff, too. I recently tanned a deer hide that I removed the cape from for a pedestal mount. I wanted to try my luck with tanning the hide before I started with the mount. I used the EZ-100 tanning system that Bruce sells (all part of the EZ-2000 kit). The hide tanned perfectly. Bruce is always there for you for support (by the way Bruce, thanks for the instructions by mail!). Try the Rittel method and see how easy it is! Patrick
