Retanning deer capes

Submitted by ERic on 3/20/02. ( shinky@ameritech.net ) 64.109.205.66

I bought a cape on EBAY that was supposed to be tanned. It looks like it was
roughed fleshed in some areas. The cape was not shaved still has the thin
membrane on the skin, but the cape looks tanned. I shaved it in alittle area
and it looks like it's still a green cape underneath. Maybe it's just a surface
tan. My question is can I repickle and tan again? I checked the archives under
retanning, only got 1 response and didn't answer my question.
Thanks, Eric

If the Hair is still tight - I would!

If the hair is still tight - I'd retan it! But first rehydrate it, then go through the pickle and the tan and oiling. Obviously once its pickled I'd also shave it real good, put it back in the pickle overnight, and then touch it up the next day too! Watch your PHs as you do this. Depending on what they used to achieve what they think is a Tan - it may really raise or lower your PHs. It may be simply Borax. Keep a close eye on the PHs.
