I was wondering when you are shaving a hide what is the best way to gage how much more to remove......without putting a hole in your hide? I have just purchased a Dakota IV and so this shaving is a new game to me. These hides I am shaving currently are going to be tanned for wall hangings and such. Is it just a matter of trial and error. Or are there ways to gage how much leather is left to be removed?
Thanks
Chris

Chris, its going to take you some trial and error, hopefully not that much error, some hides are thicker than others, but youre goal should be to shave down far enough to to attain a bluish tint in the skin. The main thing to look for is a grainy appearance this is usually far enough even if you havent gone far enough to see the bluish tint. Once you get a little experience youll be amazed how much stretch youll have in youre skins, just dont be afraid even if you do cut some holes, we all have, but thats how you learn, good luck!
