I have become interested in the tanning process, and may attempt
vegetable tanning since I just took about 8 large limbs from my two oak
trees. Meanwhile, I will look into inorganic chemical tanning. Both
crrome sulfate and aluminum sulphate in an acid ph are recommended in
the literature, however, I have seen nothing about magnesium sulfate.
Will it also tan leather? And can one adjust the ph with
muriatic/hydrochloric acid? I could find little reference to either of
these in the literature, so hope that you, as experts, could advise.
Thanks.

You know all those ant-acid tablets that are for sale every where that
are used for acid indigestion? They are aimed at hydrochloric acid in
the human stomach. First stages of digestion, get the point?
The English have used Magnesium Sulfate for two or three centuries.
Epsom Salts are named after Epsom, England. Bet ya can't guess where
Epsom Downs is at. You will find a discrepancy in chemical formulation
on "modern" Mag Suls. MGSO4 is the naturally occuring variety. It can
be used with the carboxylic acids that are commonly used in the taxidermy
trade already. I would only use it as a last resort on a slimy, half-
rotten hide that I felt like I absolutely had to save. Even then, you
will probably be making a trade off of sorts, the hair may well come out
a couple of shades lighter than you desired.
While experimenting, keep a couple of things in mind. The nitrogen and
sulphur cycles are considerd to be two of the most complex cycles known,
Magnesium can be made to be explosive with the right conditions, and
there is already a lot of products on the market that are pretty realistically
user friendly.
As always, there is a lot of room left below my post.

while I fix a screw-up. MgS04 is what I should have had in the above
post. That could have caused a discrepancy in it's self couldn't it?
