I do almost all my tanning in house, but decided to send out a large
elk cape.I sent it to a reputable tannery, but am disapointed to
receive it back with about 10 or 12 holes cut in it.Is this what to
expect when i send a skin out to be tanned? I repeat:this is a well
known tannery. thanks Tom

Call the tannery in the morning and tell them! Lets look at this from a collective group, we send them work.

1st, its to save us time!

2nd, its to improve the quality of our work.

Are we to accept 3rd rate work? I dont think so. Let them know someone in the quality control end is slipping or skipping their job. Several years back a life size Bison I sent off had pieces ripped from the face, the lower legs and hooves were missing a huge rip through the head and neck area, several deerskins were ruined large huge holes cut. By a tannery that still shows its one claim to fame in it adds. There are many good tanneries out there. Let that one you used know about the problems. If they care they will make it good!

Your answer is no, it is not common or right to have so many holes. We offer quality workmanship with all of our skins. We have a long list of references that you can call to back up this statement. Many have been with us as long as we have been in business. Give us a call. 281-292-2206

Find a tannery with long time shavers! If you dont, you are going to run into this problem. When I say long time shavers, I mean 5-10 years plus. I also mean per shaver. Too many jack leggs out there that think they know what they are doing! AND THEY DONT!
