deer cape salting how long before salt brine and safteeacid

does a deer cape that has been salted have to be rock hard before tanning in saftee acid ? also need some ideas for hanging salted cape to drain have a stainless steel air conditioning condensation pan that is 4ft x 6ft with a lip on it any suggestions

But I rather it rock hard. If I know the cape is in what I call perfect condition I can salt it twice and place it in the pickle otherwise I dry it hard. Many do it all different ways and yes it works but there may a good chance for problems.
The rack I use is made from plastic and it lays on a slant to drain off the fluids.
