I want to purchase a cowhide rug. What should I be looking for to make sure the rug I purchase is good quality? Should I be looking for one that is treated in a certain way to help with wear? And do you think it's safe to purchase one over the internet (will the quality be ok)? I'd really appreciate any advice regarding cowhide rugs before I make a purchase. Thanks.

I don't don't what you're expecting, but it's a cow hide. I would assume it has the hair on and maybe you SHOULD find out if it a Jersey, Guernsey, Hereford, Angus, or Brahma, but other than that, I don't know what else you'd be concerned with. Tanning has a myriad of qualities to it and a soft, permanent tan on a hide that has been "split" is desirable. Buying ANYTHING off the internet is not the best method. You're buying sight unseen. If you plan on putting some importance to this purchase, I'd suggest you have an agreement with the seller before you buy saying that if it doesn't meet your expectations, you have the right to return and refund. (Good luck on that.) As for me, I'd want to touch it, see it, smell it before I invested in it.
