Question about contract work

Submitted by crocodile smile on 10/02/2002. ( gatorleather67@aol.com ) 68.155.32.224

I am curious as to some of the normal industry charges for hair-off tanning. Interested in deer skins made into leather.
What is considered a "normal" fee for a tannery to do this kind of work? From exploring the internet have seen prices range from $25 - $50....some charge by the piece..others by the square ft.
What is normal turn around time for such processing...?
thanks

Well that depends

I use Hershey Fur in Pennsylvania for my hair off tanning. They tan a deerhide for about $22. Now others may charge more. The turnaround time is usually several month of up to a year. Don't ask me why, that's just how they all do it. Most tanneries don't even do hair off tanning anymore. Hershey Fur turnaround was about 6 months. They do have a cut off date though. all hides have to be received before the end of April to be processed the same year. ?

Reasonable Price?

What is a reasonable price to you? You are not going to find a reputable fur dresser to tan a bison hide for very cheap. Bison tie up a lot of employee time, therefore making profit margin kinda low. It takes more chemicals to pickle, and tan. Then takes alot of time to shave, oil, comb etc. etc.
