Tanning small pieces for skull cap...need info..

Submitted by Ron on 10/15/2002. ( ) 142.16.22.18

I have kept (& frozen) 2 small (12"x12") pieces of caribou hide. I want to "tan" these pieces and put them on skull cap moulds I made for a wall mount of the horns. I obviously want to keep the fur on and would like some information as to the best method of doing this. This is my first attempt at tanning and I want to go into my local tanners and get the materials I need with some kind of knowledge of what I'm talking about.

Flesh, salt for 2 days, pickel for 3 days, neutralize in baking soda for 10 min., rinse, towel dry, apply liqua-tan, wait 4-12 hrs., freeze until ready to use. Caribou and Musk Ox hide is just about the easiest of all mammals to tan. Most likely doesn't even need to be thinned.
