Tanning Rabbit Hides?

Submitted by Tom Crawley on 10/13/2002. ( crawleys@myvine.com ) 63.150.182.38

I raise rabbits and it almost kills me to throw away the pelts after butchering. I know it's almost not worth tanning the hides due to expense, but I would like to have the hides tanned anyhow. Is there an inexpensive and easy way to tan these myself, or is there anyone who would be interested in tanning them on the halves (I send the pelts, you tan them, and send half of them back to me). Thanks.

What breed of rabbit?
Color, size, age at butchering, quantity, raised outdoors or indoors?
What cage system (pairs, singles, colony) & what type of parasite control program?

If you're raising the NICE stuff & it's basically going to be blemish free I'd be happy to tan on halves for you, so long as you ship skins salt-dried [not air-dried] rock hard. Can custom dye, stencil, or stain & shear skins as well.

If you're raising the stuff that most e-tailers resell at $ 1.00 to $ 3.00 a pelt, then your best bet is to use Lutan-F or EZ-100 and tan 'em yourself.

Alum is NOT A TAN. Do not use alum, even though it's cheap. It will dry rot your pelts and make them worthless.

I am very much interested in tanning rabbit skins myself. Any information on how to go about it will be very much appreciated. Also if anybody knows of any books, pamphlets or anything related to amateur tanning, I am all ears. (pun intended). Thanks a lot.
