Red Stag

Anyone had any problems with anything from Argentina? I took in a hog and a Red Stag recently. The skins were dry salted, although the "salt" residue on the skins looked real powdery. I went ahead and sent them out to our tannery. The tanner called me the other day and said the hog went fine but the stag cape swelled up to over an inch thick in the pickle. They resalted and made another attempt but very little change. They are going to give it another shot and see if they can get it to where it can be shaved. Im wondering if something other than salt for curing would cause this? Anyone else had this problem?
