Great job on an informative site. I like the creative way of making a fleshing tool out of a paint scraper. The recipe seems easy to follow and would work good i would think. I have a question about the 'Tanning Bath' though. What type tanning agent do you use? Chrome, Alum, Other? How much do you use?
Thanks and take care.
I use a lot of Knoblochs chemicals.I use Lutan~f a lot to.I never have had any problems that I know of with lutan~f either. Its produces a fine white leather. So does the Knoblochs to.I like their stuff a lot.Your truly,Larry
I forgot to tell you here are the directions for Lutan,,
The correct formula based on water volume is: 1 Gallon of Water, 6 Ozs. of Salt, and 2 Ozs. of Lutan F. Allow the skins to soak for 16-24 hours for a complete tan.
On the Knoblochs stuff, its called PARA~TAN and its directions are 1 oz of Para Tan to each pound of dry skin.Avg deer cape is 3~5 lbs so I would use 5 ozs of Para Tan.Go to their web page there and read about Para Tan,Its great stuff.Yours truly,Larry
I received a lot of deer skins from the deer processing place. and i want to make place mats, rugs, but how do i dry the skins out. this is all new to me. Please send me some ideas..missy
