Tanning and scraping

Submitted by Tyler Martin on 11/14/2002. ( )

I am new at trapping and tanning. I trapped a muskrat the other day. I am drying it right now. I have gotten most of the fat and stuff off. I just ordered a Rittels EZ tanning kit. Is it to late to tan it? It has been drying for about 4 days. Also will you please tell me what pickling salt is and if I need some for a hair on tan.

You're on the right track. Just let it dry hard until you recieve the Kit - then rehydrate it, so its again soft and begin the tanning process. As for Salt - you can use regular table salt (non-iodized or iodized works) or go to a feed store and buy the fine mixing salt for feeding livestock. Avoid the salts with black specs in it or other discolorations. Stay with at least the 99% pure.
