my questions is do you have to own a fleashing machine to tan a deer cap,i read in the arrchives that you must i always just use dp and was going to try use a tanned cape i thought i would beable to use a knife to shave after out of the pickle any help would be thankful.bobby d

A way to thin the hide without a fleshing machine, is to use a 'skife knife' available from just about any supply house. I started (many years ago) with a skife. It takes quite some time to do so, but it gets it done. Watch out in the brisket and leg area, as the skin gets a bit thin there. Try it and I believe you will do fine. Good luck and HAPPy taxidermy.
