tanning air dried muskrat and mink furs

Submitted by Ken on 12/18/2002. ( kentoncolling@tds.net ) 208.137.76.40

I am tanning muskrat and mink that were air dried on stretchers and never salted. After I re-hydrate and salt cure can they go directly in the acid pickle bath or do I need to dry the hides again and re-hydrate again before pickling?
Thanks.

you can go from the rehydration to rinsing well and then right in to the pickle. the epidermis has been set when you air dried it.

Are you saying that I do not need to salt cure after re-hydration but only need to rinse then pickle? I have had some past problems with hair loosening when re-hydrating then pickling.
Thanks for the info.

to salt it but if you use a commercial relaxer like Rittels ULTRA-SOFT, I don't see the need. Alot of times the problems came before the hide even got on the stretcher and dried. Never had a problem yet ! cross my fingers ! ;)
