In the past 3 years, I have had numerous animals I wanted tanned (11 Axis, 2 Sikas, 1 fox, 1 bobcat, etc.). I took the first 6 Axis hides to my taxidermist. The turnaround has averaged over 1 year and one is now over 2 years (to date, I have received only 3 back). I have the rest of the hides in a very crowded freezer at home. What alternatives does a non-taxidermist (individual) have in getting hides tanned? I live in Houston and would like to just take them to a tannery my self but I doubt that is possible. What would be a typical turnaround for most taxidermists? I know my taxidermist sends them out to be done so for the life of me I can't figure out why it is taking so long. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
