For years now I have been tanning deer capes with the following formula: for every pound of skin, 3 quarts of water, 1 cup of salt, and 1 oz of lutan-F. I recently ordered some lutan-F from Van Dykes and the directions call for two ozs. of Lutan-F for every gallon. I'm just wondering why the change. Is this wasted Lutan-F? Or is it needed? Thanks for your ideas. Steve

......these directions were simply broke down making it easier for the consumer than to have to weigh out their skins. If you add 2 oz.Lutan F and 6 oz of salt per every 1 gallon of water, you'll be good to go.Soak time for a deer cape will be from 17-19 hours. Rinse and oil.

Shouldn't you neutralize the cape before you oil and not just rinse then oil?

Rock,
I think Dave is right when he says rinse and oil after tanning. You neutralize after taking the skin out of the pickle, prior to tanning. Steve
Thanks for the update on that Steve.
I guess I must of been confused somehow. For some reason
I thought you neutralized the Lutan F after taking the
cape out of it, and then rinse. I'm just starting to use
Lutan F and needed the advice. Thanks again.
