OK, Here is a dumb question but I have had great results in the past with this method of tanning. Anyone have any input on Borax tanning? I have donee several deer hides in the past with great results and have just finished 3 caribou (they are still dryin). I'm hopin they will come out just as good. Also, I would like to do some less primitive tanning soon and am lookin for a good source of info and supplies.

I didnt know there was a borax tan. If you are doing more than rubbing borax on a green or even salted hide I would like to know what it is. If that is what your doing, I hope the caribou come out good, but I do have my doubts. Just to much hide to shrink up on you.
Pop ALWAYS used borax when tanning. I have several of his hides, that after many years look excellent! Go for it! Have no idea, to be honest, how well it will work on caribou, but I KNOW it always worked well on deer, coon, fox, muskrat, beaver, and coyote. I have the proof in my gameroom!

We have been tanning hides using just Borax and the results have been good. The hides cure well but are stiff and need to be worked to soften.
BORAX IS NOT A TAN! Case closed. It is dry preservative in it's crudest sense, but definitely NOT A TAN. Borax dissolved in water has a pH of about 11 which is on the alkali side of water. Tanning pickles are 1.0 and tanning usually runs between 4 and 5. Water is 7. So if all you're doing is dipping in dissolved borax, you might be "preserving" the hide, but you ARE NOT TANNING.
Geez! I am sorry! Anybody have any input on Borax PRESERVING skins? How's that George? Take a cigarette break!
I have been using Borax on my green pelts and had good results, although the pelts only sit for a maximiun of 5 1/2 monthes in the barn. After removing the hide, fleshing, sewing and splitting the tail I put on the strecher (fur side in) and dust the hide with borax, let sit for 2,3,4 or 5 days till its dry to the touch but still able to be flipped right side out. Flip it right side out then put back on the strecher with a piece of wood or something in the middle to allow good air flow and let sit to untill the fur sale. Havent had any spoil yet. Dont believe it would last for taxidermy purposes though.
Any sugestions for easier or better preperation of the hides will be appreciated.
guess it's not REALLY tanning unless yer using TANNIN eh?;)
