Deer Skin Rug

Hello all. I am very new at this so please forgive me for my ignorance. I have mounted one whitetail and am in the process of doing two others. My question is on tanning though. My 9 year-old sone killed a button buck in the youth season and wanted something to remember it by. I figured that if "Syn-Oil-Tan' was good enough for gameheads it would be fine for a rug. I tanned it using the syn-oil and everything seemed fine but I had to go on a business trip for a week before it was totally dry. It seemed really pliable and I thought this was going to be perfect. Well while I was gone I just laid the hide over the back of a chair to continue to dry. Well it did and dried stiff in this position. Doesn't look too good on the floor in the "U" shape. The entire hide is pretty stiff and I want to know what I have to do to make it permanently pliable and not stain the carpet it is laying on. I've read quite a bit about breaking and using oil but I keep reading contradicting statements. What is my best bet to bring this back to life? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

not familiar (in that ive never used it) with the type of tan you mentioned but with most all you need to do is soak hide in a solution of water and salt (aprox. i handful per gallon) for about 30 mins or so then squeeze out excess water place in plastic bag and refrigerate for a day or 2
